Lions' Bland Music Contest
The Rappahannock Lions Club is looking for musically talented youths to compete in its annual Bland Music Contest. The event, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26, gives young musicians an opportunity to perform, and members of the community a chance to listen to and appreciate their music. And, prizes of $100, $50 and $25 savings bonds are awarded to the top contestants in the instrumental and voice categories. First-place winners also advance to regional, state and national competitions, where additional cash awards and scholarships are presented. Interested students should contact their music teacher, Lion Mike Mahoney (675-3446) or any member of the Rappahannock Lions Club.
Poetry series begins Feb. 21
The work of the remarkable New Jersey poet-physician, William Carlos Williams, will be the first in the “Voices and Visions” poetry series starting this Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in Rappahannock County High School’s new auditorium. Sponsored by the Rappahannock County Library and made possible by a grant from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities, each program of the series will include a wide-screen video of the poet’s life and work and a lively discussion led by the award-winning poet Peter Klappert. William Carlos Williams’ work established a distinctly American kind of poem, using common objects and experience as well as colloquial American speech. The other poets in the series will be T.S. Eliot on March 7. Langston Hughes on March 21, Elizabeth Bishop on April 4 and Sylvia Plath on April 11. Call the Rappahannock County Library for poetry materials and further information at 6753780.
