In the final period the Panthers’ troubles started right away with three turnovers which led to seven Mason points and a 50-50 deadlock. To make matters worse, Anthony Porter picked up his fourth foul, and Smith was left alone to defend against GM’s big men.
Capitalizing on their size advantage, the Mustangs built a 58-54 lead with three minutes remaining.
Porter returned for a blocked shot and Julian Groves raced down the court for two to set the score at 56-58. Rappahannock never scored again, missing three front ends of one-and-ones and Mason tallied the game’s final 12 points for the 70-56 upset.
Coach Leake said his team had made a complete turnaround since last week. “Anytime you score six points in a quarter (fourth), you're not going to win.” saw the big turning point come when George Mason started getting the ball to their big men in the second half. "I always tell my guys to make adjustments, not excuses,” said Coach Leake. “We didn’t do that tonight and Miller ate us up. ”
The Mustangs’ big man scored 17 points in the second half including eight of nine from the foul line. The Panthers were an abysmal three of 11 from the line, with most of their misses coming on the front end of one-and-ones. Dunn had 24 points in' the game, none of them in the final period.
The jayvees posted an easy 73-45 win, paced by 15 points from Paul Hitt and Kenneth Baldwin.
After playing Page County in an away contest on Wednesday, Rappahannock will finish the regular season at Manassas Park on Friday.
