My office records to date show a 2 to 1 margin opposing the bill.
Those who say this bill would have prevented the Richmond and Virginia Beach crimes need to look closer at the facts. In Richmond the murderer had stolen the gun from the car of an offduty police officer. This legislation does not prevent or delay the sale of such guns to state or federal law enforcement officers, so the Richmond murder would not have been prevented with this bill.
As for the Virginia Beach tragedy, the murderer was a minor who would have automatically been prevented from buying such a weapon because of his age. Instead, he obtained the gun from an adult relative. How can we effectively legislate against these occurences.
Our constitution preserves the rights of citizens to protect their families, their homes, and their property. My responsibility is to preserve those constitutional rights. At the same time, however, as a Virginia legislator I am also charged with the responsibility to see that threats to life and property are punished with the strongest criminal laws that can be enforced.
As much as I abhor the taking of innocent life by these weapons, the answer is not paperwork, it’s enforcement of our laws.
