pre-fab houses appeared almost overnight, forming a perfect suburban line with two existing ramblers. Such a Fairfax-like development would be bad enough in one of the county’s towns or even clustered in a high-density area. But to situate so many homes with no consideration to neighbors or nature seems selfish and short-sighted.

I know that these families consider it their right to do anything they want with “their” land. I know that all of this construction represents a lot of folks’ dreams.

And as I have worked hard over the years to earn an honest living for my family, I know the importance of nurturing my family’s dreams. But I have never thought for one instant that our dreams had to be fulfilled at the expense of others — everyone and everything else be damned.

None of us “owns” land — we are merely caretakers of it for generations to come. In 50 or 100 or 1,000 years, how will we be remembered? My dream is that we will be blessed by our children’s children as vigilant, careful stewards of their most treasured inheritance.
