The Rappahannock Panthers dug themselves a hole last week when they dropped two Bull Run District contests.
On Wednesday the Panthers battled hard before succumbing to Virginia’s sixth-ranked Central Falcons 79-70. Then on Friday, still reeling from the emotional battle for first place, RCHS was whipped by the Strasburg Rams, 74-50.
The Central game was a classic confrontation between two strongwilled and talented teams. At moments it seemed doubtful that the small Woodstock gymnasium could withstand the high energy level of the rowdy fans, high-strung coaches and enthusiastic players. The game also featured the Bull Run’s two premier players: Brett Walters and Eric Dunn.
The Panthers drew first blood when Eric Dunn scored on the opening possession. Doug Smith added another bucket for a 4-0 advantage.
With a little over a minute left in the first quarter, Rappahannock held a 17-9 lead. And Falcon ace Brett Walters had two fouls, both drawn on charges. But despite some very physical play, especially on the offensive boards, Walters escaped the whistle for the remainder of the contest.
