Editor’s note: The Rappahannock County Library has been selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association as one of 25 libraries in the country, and the Only one in Virginia, to offer its community the innovative and exciting poetry series, “Voices and Visions.”
Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 21, this five-part series will present largescreen video programs previously shown on PBS on five poets: William Carlos Williams, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, Elizabeth Bishop and Sylvia Plath. The programs will be held at the Rappahannock County High School auditorium every other Tuesday, beginning at 7 p.m., through April 11.
Leading the discussions for each program in the series, and presenting a sixth program on his own works, will be George Mason University English professor Peter Klappert. He is the author of five books of poetry, the titles of which may give some clues to his personality: Lugging Vegetables to Nantucket (1971), Circular Stairs (1975), Non Sequitar O’Conner (1977), ’52 Pickup (198k), and The Idiot Princess of the Last Dynasty (198k).
His poetry appears widely in journals and magazines, among them Poetry, Paris Review, American Poetry Review, Harper's and The Atlantic Monthly, and is included in numerous anthologies and textbooks. Prof. Klappert’s honors and awards include The Yale Series of Younger Poets competition, a number of grants and fellowships amd the Distinguished Faculty Award bestowed by George Mason University. He directed the school’s graduate writing program during its inception in 1979-80, and again from 1985-88.
