tendency by Virginians to associate vocational students with academic inferiority. “Our public image does not represent the truth,” Ms. Bell noted.

And, in 1987, 91.6 percent of the high school students who had completed a vocational education program in Virginia were working, serving in the military or continuing their education. Only two to three percent were unemployed.

As a result of the findings, the Virginia Department of Education, Division of Vocational Education, will begin an aggressive statewide communications effort. The effort is to be implemented by local vocational education administrators and teachers and is aimed at local media and local civic groups. Public service announcements, slide shows, video presentations and press materials have been prepared and distributed to allow the communications effort to commence during Vocational Education Week, Feb. 12-18.
