“My first encounter with the Voices and Visions video series was at the Associated Writing Programs’ annual meeting in Savannah, Ga., in 1984. AWP is the national organization of writing programs and writers who teach, and as part of the meeting that year, we previewed the Voices and Visions film on Ezra Pound. That film, by the way, was the first of the films completed and the only one to use the original 90minute format.
“That film on Pound has been criticized for dwelling too much on Pound’s political and economic fanaticism and not enough on his central place in the evolution of 20th-century art (indeed, all the arts!), but I was powerfully moved and impressed by it nonetheless.
“Later in the meeting I found the opportunity to talk with Lawrence Pitkethly, executive director of the New' York Center for Visual History and executive producer for the whole series. I approached him as a teacher interested in a new learning aid — I was interested in showing some of the films to my students at George Mason University.
