when they arrived in the New World, Columbus and his crew mistakenly called turkeys “tuka,” an Indian word for peacock. But they weren’t as far from the mark with the bird as they were on the map. The turkey is actually a relative of the peacock.
Early settlers brought domesticated birds from Europe and crossed them with the big wild turkeys that roamed in large flocks from the Atlantic coast to the R'ockies and from the Great Lakes into Central America.
