The only spraying for gypsy moths in Rappahannock County this season is being paid for by private landowners since a federal spray program has pulled out of Rappahannock.
Last year a few thousand acres in Stonewall-Hawthome District were sprayed under the Appalachian Integrated Pest Management Program, but this year the program has been cut back and the scientists have chosen to focus their efforts further south, near the line of infestation in Greene and Albemarle counties, according to Rappahannock County Adminstrator John McCarthy.
The county has never had a cost-share program that would spray for the pests, and last year the federal program was the only way landowners could avoid footing
