Mr. Kilpatrick’s letter said he had requested approval to proceed with the project, and said his office would inform Mr. McCarthy’s office when a decision had been reached. He suggested Mr. McCarthy contact Delores Tokasz of his office if he had further questions.

Mr. McCarthy spoke with Ms. Tokasz and received a letter from her dated Jan. 21 requesting another one-year extension of the special use permit.

Her letter said her division “had undergone a management change and budget review process. Before the new manager of the Northern Virginia Division will authorize the expenditure of funds for any new building a review of the area plan is being performed by his staff,” the letter continued.

At the February BZA meeting the board approved the one-year extension, but required that progress be shown within six months.

Mr. Welch said he had a letter saying everything had been put on hold. He said he believes the Postal Service has lost interest in acquiring a permanent location for the post office.
