Unseasonably warm weather challenged runners at the Old Dominion Point-to-Point April 6, but veteran winners Topeador and Alpha Wave took it all in their stride for owners Henry Wood and Leigh Louria.
Sanctioned runner Mihmaz with Graham Alcock proved fastest over open hurdles, with Blue Rocket taking his second timber race of the season with Loudoun huntsman Bay Cockbum.
Jean Sutula of Leesburg won her first race aboard her mother’s Honey’s Fuel in foxhunters’ timber after Missy Monocacy and Leslie LeGore went off course. Sutula’s horse is trained by her stepfather, Harry Wight.
Venture One was an upset victor when he took the Ben Venue ladies’ timber race by 4Vz lengths over favorite Crab Apple, winner this year at the Rappahannock, Warrenton and Piedmont point-to-points.
Dawn Dugan put Crab Apple out in front right away, and she continued to widen the distance between her and Charles Town rider Susan Runco on Venture One. Diamontaire, Michele Rouse up, and Reasono with Leigh Louria followed behind.
By the third to last Crab Apple had lengthened his advantage to ten lengths, and a turn in the winners’ circle looked like a sure bet for the pair. Then Runco unleashed Venture One up the hill at the second to last, and the Laura Whitney-trained horse was at the last fence first. Crab Apple failed to fire up the hill, and by the stretch Venture One had secured his advantage.
“I knew there was no way that they were going to go three miles at that pace,” said Runco, who trains race horses at Charles Town. “I’ve been at the race track all my life — if you don’t know what a 2'/a lick is, you’re out of luck. They were going way too fast — they had to come back.”
