Softball team
wins first-ever
on new field

The Rappahannock High girls’ softball team had a memorable week: besides winning two district contests by one-sided scores, they also recorded the first-ever victory on the team’s new field.
They beat Stonewall Jackson-Mount Jackson 19-4 Tuesday in a game that was ended after six innings under the district’s “slaughter rule.” Whenever a team is up by 15 runs after the fifth inning, the game is called.
On Monday the Lady Panthers travelled to Falls Church to take on district foe George Mason High and won that game too, by a score of 16-5. Together with a loss Friday to Clarke County, the team is 2-3 in the Bull Run District, 2-5 overall.
“We have had the lead in four of the five games we’ve lost in the fourth inning,” said coach Renee Leake. “My big word all week was intensity, and I honestly think that intensity can carry us to a lot of victories.” Coach Leake said that this week, at least in the two wins, that intensity was there.
Susan Payne, who has pitched every inning of the Lady Panthers’ seven games, got both wins this week. “Susan is holding most teams to about four or five hits,” said Coach Leake. “I think she’s definitely doing her job.”
