Walt Longyear, chairman of the county Republican party, said the open seat might offer an opportunity for someone from Rappahannock to serve in the legislature. “No one has in the past because Del. Guest has been such a strong representative. Maybe we ought to start recruiting candidates,” he said.
Most local officials welcomed the change to the new Senate District but were not familiar with Sen. Michie’s record. “This puts us in with counties that are more like Rappahannock,” Mr. Massie said.
Mr. Estes said he felt Sen. Miller “well represented Shenandoah Valley interests during the time of his representation of Rappahannock County.” He was concerned, however, that someone “representing a
