Stefanie’s Dancer jumped the sixth fence awkwardly, giving the advantage to Barcalric. But Worrall got Stephanie’s Dancer up again by the eighth but fell at the last, leaving Bourke to fight it out against Wisp ’0 Wind with Peter Walsh. It was Barcalaric’s win, however, by ten lengths at the wire.

“He’s a strong-running horse; He likes to run on the front end. I would have liked to slow down, but Stefanie’s Dancer kept coming up besides him so he just kept picking up the speed a bit more,” said Bourke about his ride.

Foxhunters opened the day at noon going 2Vi miles over 14 fences. Though Leslie LeGore on Missy Monocacy crossed the finish first, LeGore missed a beacon, giving Jean Sutula on Honey’s Fuel a fitting 18th birthday present.

Honey’s Fuel, a 13-year-old mare, is a horse whom Jean’s mother, Susan Sutula-Wight, used to race in ladies timber.

It was the young Sutula’s first win.

Sutula, who hunts with Loudoun, is steeped in the sport. “My stepfather is the huntsman and my Mom is a whip,” said Sutula of her family’s involvement.

Leigh Louria and Alpha Wave added five more points to their 12 in the owner-rider hurdles when Alpha Wave took the Big Cobbler by 10 lengths over Tom’s War with Ready Snodgrass.

Alpha Wave set the pace throughout the race, leaving Height of Passion and Tom’s War to fight for second at the wire, where Tom’s War prevailed over Height of Passion by a nose.

“I let him ride his own race. The horse is a professional race horse. I just go along for the ride,” said Louria, a cook at the Coffee Exchange in Charlottesville.“He ponies for me and cuts the cows,” she said.

Graham Alcock piloted Kinross Farm’s Mihmaz to an open hurdle victory over Hot Rodder and Peter Walsh.
