listed Rappahannock Sheriff John Henry Woodward said the Ben Venue horse races went off without a hitch Saturday.
He estimated the crowd at 8,000-10,000 people and about 2,000 cars. Sheriff Woodward also reported the trend in alcohol and DUI offenses continued this week. Over the weekend, he said, troopers and deputies arrested six people on charges of drunk in public and made five driving-under-the-influence charges. “I don’t know why this is happening,” said the sheriff. “I guess springtime has brought out the drunks.”
