Where Dimilin, a chemical agent, was used, landowners reported success. Where Bt (a biological agent) and Gypcheck (a new, organic method) were used the reports were less positive.
Mr. McCarthy said there was some private spraying in the town of Washington, a good deal around Red Oak Mountain and some aroiyid Amissville. Mostly, however, private spraying efforts in the county are spotty, he said.
He said that if an area is stripped one year, and sprayed the next, the trees will probably be saved. Much of the private spraying goes on in places that were devastated the prior year.
The cost of spraying for a private landowner, said Mr. McCarthy, “is incredibly expensive.”
