When the Regan Administration began, Mr. Day moved back to D.C.
He retired again.
This time it was for real. In 1983, he moved back to Rappahannock County.
“This place really grew on me,” he said.
He referred to a fundraiser for RAAC one Christmastime.
“I watched the people coming in and hugging each other and greeting each other. They really like each other, I said to myself,” he said.
“And, that was nice. The people here are very special,” he added.
Some of the people are very special to Mr. Day.
“I came here because of my kids,” he said with a smile, adding besides the children, there were grandchildren.
“I credit my children with my own prosperity,” he said with pride.
“You know, I started as a Republican and a terrible conservative,” he said with a slow smile lightening his face.
“My children have made me a liberal. I realize I could never have a relationship with my children as a conservative. And, they are the most important thing in my life,” he laughed.
He talks of them, describing their habits and children with love and pride.
“I get stuck babysitting once in a while,” he said.
