“Both of these roads have steady traffic,” Mr. Gilbert said.
“We get a lot of local people, constuction workers and travelers,” he said.
“But, we are here for the local people,” Mrs. Gilbert said, adding it’s nice to see visitors and meet the variety of people who come into the store but “we really are here for the local people.”
Trying to accomodate as many of the people as possible, the Gilberts keep a “request list alongside the cash register” to record what customers need in their store.
A retired program manager with IBM, Mr. Gilbert, and his wife, once employed by Dominion Water in Manassas, have had little experience in the mercantile trade.
“We just used some common sense,” Mr. Gilbert said, adding “we put in things we would want to have in a store.”
“I think it’s working, too,” he said with a smile.
The door swings open at a constant rate as customers, weary from the road, needing home supplies, or just a youth looking for a snack, visit the store.
