The town Planning Commission looked over a revised Historic District Ordinance Monday night and voted to send it to the Architectural Review Board for their consideration.
Chairman Louise Van Dort used a draft of the ordinance prepared by County Administrator John McCarthy and incorporated into it recommendations from Ann Miller, certified local government coordinat°r for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
Ms. Miller had reviewed Mr. McCarthy’s draft and made several suggestions for changes that would enable the ARB and the ordinance to be part of the state’s “Certified Local Government Program.”
The planners’ review of the ordinance left several decisions for the ARB, but they did vote to provide that no more than one member of the ARB could be a non-resident of the town.
The 18-page document follows fairly closely the current ordinance, but seems to allow for more flexibility. Under the current ordinance in the historic district that includes most of the town no materials may be used that were not in use in 1900 in the town.
