The Rappahannock Public Library's new building has many attractions, not the least of which are its design and location. The fact that it is brand-new may account for some of the library’s recent success in attracting new patrons and volunteers, but not all.
One year ago, in July 1990, the library checked out 1,595 books. This July the new building saw an increase of 20 percent, to 1,870 books. August promises to be even better, with a one-day record of353 books checked out on Aug. 14.
Even more encouraging, the number of volunteers has increased this summer from eight to 18. And the new community room of the building is in constant demand, its 85-person seating capacity filling a great need in the community. Most dramatically, the number of new library cards issued increased from only four in July 1990 to 102 in July 1991, an increase of 2,450 percent. Those figures speak for themselves.
The library hosts its official dedication at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at the building on U.S. 211-522 at Washington. Many of the Rappahannock residents who saw the plan through to fruition will be on hand to see the ribbon cutting and casually peruse the book collection.
Congratulations to everyone involved in what one Friends member accurately described as a project that cut across religious, social, economic and political boundaries.
