This last resolution also passed unanimously. It states: “We urge the legislators to stop, then to reverse, the growth of Virginia’s state government.” The resolution notes that in the past 10 years the state budget has increased from $2.5 billion to $5.1 billion. “No wonder the state treasury faces a daunting deficit,” the resolution continues. It notes that the largest item in the state budget is for education yet scores on SAT tests show a decline in Virginia in the past 10 years.
The next largest item in the state government is for “individual and family services . . . yet problems and costs continue to increase.” Finally the resolution notes that spending for crime has increased from $248 million to $948 million. “Has our crime problem been solved or improved?” the resolution asks. ‘To spend more and do worse is not a sign of good leadership and management. The least the state government can do is spend less.” the resolution concludes.
The resolutions to limit terms in the General Assembly and to allow laws to be passed or recinded by ballot initiative did not receive unanimous support.
