Due to the recent increase of non-Cancer Society mail fundraising appeals, the Rappahannock Unit of the American Cancer Society offers the following advice to anyone planning to donate money to them: Request a copy of the group’s financial report, and determine what percentage of their income is spent on fundraising and administration.
“They may be charitable, and within the law, but that doesn’t mean they’re ethically correct,” according to Carol Miller of the Rappahannock Unix,.
The county unit will hold its next meeting in mid-September, said Mrs. Miller. Call her at 675-3691 for more information.
The local unit has raised $2,913 in the last year, and has helped 11 patients with services valued at $3,520. No money has been spent on fundraising by the American Cancer Society in Rappahannock this year.
