Abortion Stands have sunk more than a few Republican ships during the past few years (see Marshall Coleman), perhaps one reason why the county GOP endorsed a platform that would make abortion a personal ethical choice, which of course it is. With the sad spectacle in Wichita, Kansas making the evening news all month, the Rappahannock conservatives deserve much credit for taldng a stand on the issue at this time.
Changing the party’s national platform on the issue will prove to be much harder, but it may turn out that enough political planners have seen the way the wind is blowing, and will put the issue to rest forever. On the other hand, pro-life forces have to be encouraged by changes in the makeup of the Supreme Court, and they have plenty of friends in state legislatures to keep the matter in the forefront of political debate.
It has always been a little uneasy for the Republicans, who would “get government out of our lives,” to embrace proltfe stands, injecting themselves into the womb and into the intimacies of patient-doctor conversations. Perhaps the vote in Washington Tuesday night will be a harbinger of things to come.
