Following a public hearing this week the Board of Supervisors voted to rezone 2.24 acres owned by Frances Semones from Mobile Home Park to Village Commercial to house the Amissville Post Office.
The rezoning was made contingent on the U.S. Postal Service choosing that site for the new post office.
Amissville resident Louis G. “Butch” Zindel said he did not object to the post office, but he urged the supervisors not to grant the rezoning because he said it would lead to “a strip of commercial zoning from Hackley’s Store to the Lombardy Restaurant.”
He said there were houses between Hackley’s and Mrs. Semmones property and a mobile home park on the other side.. “How could you turn down the trailor park or the houses when they want rezoning?” he asked.
He noted that the Comprehensive Plan calls for “economic growth compatible with the county’s rural character” and discourages strip commercial zoning. He said a commercial strip along the highway would “discourage tourism.”
