Buttermilk icing (Frances Foster) 1 tsp. soda 1 cup buttermilk 2 cups sugar 3/4 cup butter 1 tsp. vanilla Stir soda into buttermilk; combine all ingredients except vanilla in sauce pan, cook until icing forms soft ball; cool, add vanilla, beat slightly. Spread over side and top of cake. Note: Frances said this recipe makes a lot of icing. She uses only half of recipe. Very good on fresh apple cake.
