The Rappahannock High boys varsity basketball team opens its regular season Friday, Dec. 6 at non-conference opponent Luray, hoping that a balanced Bull Run District and a strong performance against Wilson Memorial bode well for the coming season.

Four of the team’s five starters scored in double figures during the controlled scrimmage against Wilson last Wednesday, with forward Michael Williams scoring 34 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

The Panthers, who Coach Gary Leake says will emphasize the running game this year, shot an astronomical 60 percent from the floor and a more-than-respectable 70 percent from the free-throw stripe against Wilson. The Panthers also made four of the five three-point shots they attempted. •

Several special rules were used during the scrimmage. The teams played six quarters and erased the score after each quarter, and only shot free throws every other quarter. With all six quarters tallied together, the Panthers lost by about five points, said Coach Leake.

He said the running game, the half-court trap defense and the shooting percentages were the scrimmage’s high points; poor ball protection and too many turnovers were the major problems.

Coach Leake said ball distribution was balanced, and the Panthers were faster and better-conditioned than Wilson Memorial.

“I like to have several different weapons,” said the coach. ‘This year you can’t say you have to stop one man to beat Rappahannock. You have to stop about eight.”
