Detail from scene in ‘Mutzmag.’
lina, on Davenport’s farm/studio near Delaplane, and in Buchanan Hall in Upperville where local carpenter Randolph Lloyd constructed a complete log cabin under the dirajtion of set designer Doug Ball. (Mr. Ball was the former head of Literacy Volunteers in Fauquier County.) '
“Mutzmag” is reminiscent of Davenport’s earlier work “Hansel and Gretel: An Appalachian Version.” Like many folktales, it contains dark and scary scenes. Mr. Davenport has chosen to be faithful to the folktale and target an audience age 10 through adult, although, with parental or teacher guidance, the film will work well with younger audiences. ;
Funding for “Mutzmag” came from a $246,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. “Mutzmag” is 53 minutes long and will be released January 1992 in 16mm ($550) and video ($89). Earlier titles from the “From the Brothers Grimm” series are available at $19.95 each by mail order or phone from Davenport Films.
The films are distributed in video by Davenport Films, Rt. 1 Box 527, Delaplane Va. 22025, call 703-592-3701. The release is January 1992.
