Samuel Walter Varner, now
a trim and active eightyfour years old, joined the Masonic Order in 1919 and was recently honored by Lodge No. 78 AF and AM of Washington, Va. when he was awarded a fifty year pin. He has lived on the rolling one-hundred-and-thirtythree acre Varner homestead for most of his busy life. The tall white house at the crest of the hill commands a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge. Black cattle dot the fields and a tall pine with drooping branches stands beside the house.
