High Alumni Basketball Tournament raised more than $1,000 to support the school’s Athletic Department over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Team 4, featuring mostly recent graduates, won the championship game Saturday night against Team 1, the oldest (on average) team, 10097.
Tommy Jenkins, Class of 1986, was named tournament MVP and received a three-foot trophy. He scored 72 of his team’s 203 points over two games.
“The Athletic Department raised over $1,000 and would like to thank all players for participating, the community for supporting the tournament and to Shenandoah Motors in Front Royal for providing game jerseys and trophies,” said Coach Leake, who organized the event and played for the second-place team.
In the first Friday night game, eventual champions Team 4 held off Team 3 103-101 in overtime. Leading scorers were: (Team 4) Tommy Jenkins, 40; Paul Hitt, 14; Anthony Porter, 12; (Team 3) Pete Aylor, 20; Doug Smith, 18; Danny Ellis, 16; Jamie Walters, 14; and Carroll Settle, 12.
In the second game Friday, Team 1 beat Team 2, 113-110. Leading scorers: (Team 1) Gary Leake, 33; Butch Foster, 31; Richard Tribino, 12; (Team 2) Eric Dunn, 26; Clarence Pendleton, 25; Walter Frye, 17; Devin Moore, 14; and Garri Jackson, 10.
In the third-place game Saturday, Team 2 rolled to an easy victory against Team 3. Leading scorers: (Team 2) Clarence Pendleton, 32; Eric Dunn, 24; Walter Frye, 18; Carroll Frye, 12; (Team 3) Carroll Settle, 21; Danny Ellis, 16; and Doug Smith, 14.
For the winning Team 4 in the championship game Tommy Jenkins poured in 32, Paul Hitt had 27 points and Mike Payne and Kenneth Baldwin had 10 each. Scorers for runnerup Team 1 were Butch Foster, 23; Gary Leake, 20; Brooke Miller, 14; and Richard Tribino, 11.
Volleyball team
starts new campaign
The Lady Panthers varsity volleyball team opens its season Dec. 10 with a non-district game at Manassas Park High, and Coach Paul Paratore said his 13-girl squad is hoping to be competitive.
“My philosophy is to play correctly and do your best. No matter who we go against we want to give them our best shot,” said the twoyear coach.
