Virginia will be getting approximately $425 million a year over the next six years from the federal government under the surface transportation bill passed by Congress last week.
The six-year funding represents more than a $1 billion increase for the Commonwealth over the 1987 five-year appropriation. The new bill also gives the state greater leeway in allocating the funds to various projects.
“Virginia’s urban regions will have greater authority in decision making and project selection to address their critical congestion problems. Localities will have discretion to direct highway dollars to specific highway needs or mass transit projects such as commuter rail or expanded bus service,” said Sen.
