Since that time there have been numerous hearings, conferences, newspaper articles and letters, and of course the August eviction of the school.
Last year there were about 300 students enrolled at Wakefield School in Huntly. Now there are about 150 at Wakefield-Marshall, about 70 at Wakefield CDS in Huntly and about 80 former students enrolled somewhere else.
Most of the faculty stayed with the Marshall group, which kept all the school’s records, its corporate status and any materials purchased by the school since its 1978 incorporation.
However, the schools’ supplies have been the subject of much grief between the two institutions. When Wakefield-Marshall arrived in Huntly last fall to remove library books because of a court order, photos of Nazis burning books were taped to the Huntly building doors.
Wakefield CDS-Huntly has waged an aggressive fundraising campaign to cover operating expenses this year, and a single (anonymous) donor has already pledged $200,000. Wakefield-Marshall has struggled to stay afloat this year, but staff and parents have said that moving from Huntly has been worth the considerable sacrifice.
