The 1991 season began early for the rising 6-year-old. “We took him down to Southern Pines, N.C., to run in mid-February,” Ay lor said. Irishman Pat Cooney got the call on Vernon and the pair finished third in good company.
Cooney retained the mount, racing again March 16 at the Warrenton Hunt Point-to-Point. Even though they were visibly shut off coming into the final quarter, Cooney and Vernon’s Victory placed second in this try. Next they went to the Carolina Cup in Camden, S.C., where Vernon was simply outrun by faster competition into fifth place.
At the April 21 running of the A H. Hunt Memorial Cross Country race, Cooney and Vernon faced starter T. Roy Wright and a whole new type of obstacle. “When we heard about this new course [at Middleburg’s Glenwood Park], we looked at the fences and built some similar at the farm to train over,” Aylor said.
