LEAD PAD — The leather and felt weight pad carried by the horse under the saddle. The rider places flat pieces of lead in the pad to equal the assigned weight in the race.
MAIDEN — A horse that has never won a race, or, a horse that has never won a race over the specific obstacle it faces in a particular race.
NOVICE — A horse that has not won prior to the start of the current season.
NSHA — The National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, the governing body for ’chasing in the United States.
OFF-COURSE — The act of cutting a beacon or following the wrong course, thereby resulting in disqualification.
OUTRIDERS — Mounted horsemen at race meetings who assist taking the field to the post. Outriders also may collect loose horses and aid with crowd control.
