The Rappahannock High varsity basketball team registered its highest offensive output of the season against Manassas Park at home Friday night, blowing out the Cougars, 81-59 to clinch a spot in the Bull Run District Tournament at Warren County High next week.
All five Rappahannock starters were in double figures, led by senior forward James Roy, who had 18 points and 19 rebounds. Kevin Jolliffe had 17, Jason Henry scored 16, Damien Muriel got 10 points and 6-5 senior Ryan Welch, starting for leading scorer Michael Williams, had 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Welch also provided one of the game’s highlights when he soared above a Manassas Park defender (who fouled him) to dunk it, the team’s second dunk of the season. He also converted the free throw.
"Everybody played, and everybody contributed,” said Panthers Coach Gary Leake. Aggressive defense, a working fast-break and a 5823 rebounding margin were keys to the game.
“It probably was our best team effort of the year—offensively and defensively,” said Coach Leake.
The tournament seedings are still up in the air. As of Tuesday afternoon there were four possible scenarios that would change Rappahannock’s situation.
