Undaunted, Wofford tried him over brush at Great Meadow in the fall of 1987. With Irish-born David Bourke in the irons, Imperial Mom locked up at the start, finishing a dismal ninth.
It got worse. On Oct. 23, at Nashville, Tennessee’s Royal Chase, general mayhem resulted in Imperial Mom flipping over at the start. “After getting up, David (Bourke) said, ‘Ah, Bill, he’ll be o.k.’ Frustrated, Wofford asked, ‘Do you like this horse?' Bourke replied: ‘I love this horse.’ So I said, ‘He’s yours!’ and gave him Imperial Mom, complete with halter and lead shank,” Wofford related.
The game Bourke shipped his gift horse back to Montpelier Station. He ran once more that fall, at Montpelier, where he was clearly outclassed. Around that time, trainer Noel Twyman stepped in to polish up their starting technique. “We got to where, when we did get him going. I’d gallop him two or more miles fora 1 1/2-mile race, ’ ’ Bourke recalled.
