PADDOCK — The ring or area where the horses are saddled before a race.
POINT-TO-POINT —A steeplechase race meeting managed by a foxhunt or other organization which is not run under NSHA rules. The races most often do follow the general NSHA rules, but are not likely to offer large purses. Also referred to as the “pots and pans circuit,” since the prizes are generally silver trophies.
POST PARADE —When the horses in the race parade past the crowd on the way to the starting point.
PURSE — The money offered in a race. Purse money is generally divided as follows: 60% to the winner, 20% to second place, 11% to third, 6% to fourth and 3% to fifth.
