The public will get yet another crack at the Town of Washington Subdivision Ordinance next month. After almost two hours of discussion and public comment last Wednesday, the Town Council decided to leave the public hearing open for 30 days.
The council’s joint public hearing with the town Planning Commission ranged over a number of issues, but the one that generated the most discussion was septic fields.
Council member Newbill Miller and Mayor Dean Morehouse both argued in favor of relaxing septic requirements for lots that will be “grandfathered” under the new ordinance.
Mr. Miller said that existing lots' should be allowed to be approved if they meet Virginia Department of Health requirements, which are less stringent in their requirements for secondary drainfields than will be the town’s new ordinance. The council’s consensus appeared to be that existing lots would be acceptable with only a primary drainfield.
But any new lot would need a secondary drainfield under the new ordinance. “It says clearly that any new lot has to have primary and secondary drainfields,” said council member Susan Parrish.
