America. Four of the local point-to-points were organized before the Virginia Gold Cup and International Gold Cup at Great Meadow — the Piedmont Races in 1840, the Warrenton Races in 1887, the Orange County Races in 1903, and the Casanova Races in 1910.
Up to 50,000 steeplechase enthusiasts now converge on Great Meadow each May for the annual one-day Virginia Gold Cup. First held in 1922, it is one t)f die most distinguished steeplechasing events in the nation.
Culturally, steeplechasing today remains essentially unchanged from its rural origins. Like other charitable events, sanctioned steeplechase meets are run largely by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis at virtually all of the approximately 38 one or twoday meetings held in the eastern and midwestem states each year. These events have a combined annual public attendance of some 750,000 people.
