The 1991 Virginia Steeplechase Association’s Hurdle Horse of the Year, Vernon’s Victory, went his award the hard way.
Jo Pat Murphy’s 7-year-old steeplechase champion ran nine times over hurdles last year, being beaten on every occasion. The winning margins opened up by his victors are telling of this courageous little tryer who found the stamina to "nickle and dime ’em to death.”
“By a nose, by a head, beaten just a length for it all...” These were racecallers’ summaries of the bay gelding’s finishes. Vernon’s Victory lost his nine races by a combined total of less than 12 lengths.
