Hence, there is virtually no prospect that steeplechasing could be preserved today in a recognizable form if the conduct of steeplechase events were left to commercial, for-profit organizations.
It has been aptly put that steeplechasing gives the impression of “being a sport for the business of charity.” The majority of those who patronize steeplechasing do so because of a true love of and commitment to its continuing deep cultural and charitable qualities.
As a sport, it has been and remains primarily for farmers and amateur riders who vie for the honor of winning “pots and pans" (trophies) and relatively small purses which defray the cost of keeping steeplechase horses. Betting is not permitted on steeplechasing in Virgnia or in most other states.
Sanctioned steeplechasing events in Virginia are 100 percent operated by non-profit organizations, such as the Virginia Gold Cup Association, for community benefit. Specifically, in Virginia these events are:
