A well-earned second-place finish in Great Meadow’s novice timber race last May made believers of many. On the rebound from an injury, a lessthan-flt Imperial Mom hung at the start but managed to surge to the front. Unable to sustain that burst of speed, the gelding still shadowed Magical at the wire. “He made himself honorable,” Mrs. Rogers said with a smile.
Last fall, it was Imperial Mom in Fairfax’s Bowman Bowl by 3 1/2 lengths. Then it was time for Morven Park, and the debut of pari-mutuel racing in Virginia. As the driving force behind this event, Rogers had a lot on his mind, including his reluctant racing machine. “I just hope Imperial Mom doesn’t back up at the start,” he said in a pre-race interview.
