In sanctioned races, such as the Virginia Gold Cup, the Middleburg Spring Races and the Georgetown Races, horses must be either thoroughbreds registered with the Jockey Club or may be NSHA (National Steeplechase and Hunt Association) registered if the parentage is mostly thoroughbred.
In point-to-pointing (the majority of races seen all spring in Virginia) there is no such rule. Most runners in hurdle and timber races are in fact thoroughbred, but in foxhunter’s races, old fashioneds and pair races, crossbreds and coldbloods are as likely to be seen as bloodhorses.
Point-to-points allow participants and fans from all walks of life to gather for a day in the country to enjoy the horses, to enjoy the socializing.
