Rappahannock and Clarke both finished the year with 4-4 district records, tied for fourth in the district standings. Because only the top four teams make the tournament, they were supposed to have a playoff game for the final slot Thursday at Stonewall Jackson in Mount Jackson, a neutral site.
But snow on Thursday postponed the playoff until Saturday morning, prior to the official start of the tournament.
Clarke opened up a one-game lead by beating Rappahannock in the opener, 1&4. Coach Paratore said he counseled his players that “the worst that could have happened has happened. I told them to relax.”
Rappahannock evened the series at 1-1 with a 15-9 victory in the second game, despite not playing at the top of their game, said Coach Paratore.
In the third and deciding game the Panthers were down 5-13 before firing off 10 unanswered points to secure the fourth berth in the tournament. That was the good news. The bad news was that their opponent would be top-seeded Page, threetime state champs.
“We just couldn’t hold that pace up,” said Coach Paratore. The final score was 15-8, 15-3. Page went on later that day to win the tournament, advancing to regionals next week.
