The $43 per ton tipping fee for trash adopted by the Board of Supervisors last week is merely a paper-shuffling exercise.
The county had to create an Enterprise Fund to retire the debt on $1.62 million worth of bonds issued by the Virginia Resources Authority to construct the new cell and purchase scales for the landfill. Trash taken to the landfill will be weighed, and for every ton of trash, $43 will be transferred from the county's general fund into the Enterprise Fund.
At the same time the county adopted changes to the County Code to add a definition of “commercial hauler.” Last month the supervisors reaffirmed a policy that commercial haulers cannot use dumpster sites and must take trash to the landfill.
