President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari met with local high school exchange student, Katja Valtonen and her host parents, Geneva and Roger Welch of Flint Hill during his visit to the International Center of Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange as part of an official visit to Washington, D.C. on Monday, Nov. 7.
President Ahtisaari was accompanied by Mrs. Ahtisaari and Ambassador of Finland to the United States Jakka Valtasaari and Mrs. Valtasaari.
Katja was chosen to represent YFU Finnish exchange students in the U.S. this year. With some nervousness and great aplomb she talked to the group in both Finnish and English and was interviewd by a Finnish TV station for a broadcast back home. >
During his visit to YFU, President Ahrisaari met with other high school exchange students from Finland and their American host families, YFU Trustees, volunteers, staff and members of the local Finnish community. Also in attendance was the National Chairperson of YFU Finland, Ms. Eeva Eklund, and the National Director, Mrs. Silja Pajukka, as well as former participants in the Finland-U.S. Youth Scholarship Exchange Program.
