Almost every word-processing program has a spell-check device. The devices are mixed blessings. Spell-check wouldn’t have flagged “reeking” or “wreaking.” It wouldn't have caught the organ with petals or the rot iron legs.

For writers who have trouble with spelling, the best advice I can offer is to develop a keen sense of That Doesn’t Look Right! When the sense is triggered, the next step i.-- to look up the uncertain spelling. ”nat is why God and Dr. Johnson ga\ e us dictionaries. We ought to use them more often.
