A 20-year-old New Market man bled to death last Tuesday in the county’s first hunting fatality of the season.
The black powder season for deer opened last Monday. On Tuesday Brian Orbaugh and a companion were hunting on Richard Settle’s property on Route 637 near Flint Hill. They had arranged to meet back at a three-wheeler at 11 a.m. When Mr. Orbaugh did not return, his Companion reported him missing.
Game Warden Jim Bankston and Harry Newlin of the Virginia State Police organized a search. The Flinti Hill and Chester Gap Fire Departments were called in to help in the search. The search was called off at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning and resumed at 6 a.m. At 9:30 a.m. Mr. Orbaugh’s body was found with his muzzleloading rifle nearby. A dead deer was also near the body. The body was found by a dog handled by a member of the search and rescue team Dogs East.
Mr. Bankston said he is assuming that Mr. Orbaugh died from an accidental self-mflicted wound. He said I: '•
