Finland since 1982 and administered by YFU, the Finland-U.S. Youth Scholarship Exchange Program provides scholarships to send fourteen American exchange students to Finland every summer. This program strengthens Finnish-American relations through the cultivation of personal friendships—and often lifelong family ties—between students, their host families and communities.
YFU President and former principal deputy assistant secretary of state, William M. Woessner says, “We are honored by Presdient Ahtisaari’s visit and welcome him as a committed supporter of youth exchange. Last summer he received American YFU students at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki and has on numerous occasions demonstrated his faith in young people and their ability to foster international understanding and cooperation. ”
Youth For Understanding International Exchange, founded in 1951 to help heal the wounds of World War II, is one of the oldest, largest and most respected international Student exchange programs. More than 170,000 young people have taken part in YFU exchanges to more than 40 nations in Europe, North America, South America and the Pacific Rim. These exchanges are facilitated by YFU’s global network.
