Mid-year exams will be canceled and school will be extended another week into June to make up for days missed from school because of weather.
At the School Board meeting last Thursday, Superintendent David Gangel gave the board members two choices for making up missed days. They were identical except that one contained exam days on Jan. 30 and 31 and Feb. 1 and 2.
Dr. Gangel said teachers felt they could better use the four days of exams and two days of reviewing for exams for teaching. He urged the board to approve die schedule without exam days and said that provisions would be made for students who really wish to take exams to take them. He said some students want to take some exams in the hopes they can pull up their grades. This applies particularly to athletes hoping to remain academically eligible to play, he said.
Besides adding a week to the end of the year and moving graduation from June 8 to June IS, the new schedule includes only two days for the Spring Holiday, the Friday and Monday before and after Easter, and converts two days scheduled for teacher in-service to school days. The in-service training will be moved to Saturdays, Dr. Gangel said. This new schedule permits die school system to make up the 12 days of school missed through last Thursday. It does not provide for last Friday’s school cancellation, but Dr. Gangel said two additional days could come from going to school April 8, the Monday after Easter, and May 27, the Meihorial Day holiday.
